Diné Pride to award LGBTQ+ Youth Scholarships this June 2020

The largest Indigenous Pride celebration in the country is proud to announce the launch of the Naat’áanii LGBTQ+ Youth Scholarship Program. A deadline for all online-applications is set for Friday, June 19, 2020, at 12:00 midnight (MST).

Two separate scholarships will be presented during a special virtual event scheduled at the end of June. In a press release from Diné Pride, Executive Director, Alray Nelson said,

The Naatáanii Scholarship was created to empower and uplift the next generation of Indigenous LGBTQ+ youth leaders. Far too long, Western enculturation has distorted identity and the existence of our LGBTQ+ relatives amongst the Diné people. We plan to change that narrative by helping our own students excel in their higher education journey. Diné Pride is determined to give back to the communities we serve.

The Naatáanii Youth Scholarship is a one-time $1,000 dollar scholarship to be awarded to two (2) High School Seniors from the Navajo Nation who self-identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and/or two-spirit. Applicants must have made a significant contribution to the LGBTQ+ community and are addressing concerns facing their peers today.

Navajo Nation Pride is honoring & celebrating our LGBTQ+ relatives & reaffirming the sacredness of their heritage. There are many social disparities that affect our community & our Pride event hopes to reintroduce Navajo teachings that kept our LGBTQ+ relatives safe & revered - the way our culture recognized at one point in history.
